Very strong secondary mint mark with separation on the right side of the secondary mint mark where it meets the primary mint mark. Obverse Stage B: Stage A markers still present. Obverse Stage C: Stage A markers gone except the scratch below the L of LIBERTY. The secondary mint mark no longer shows separation. Obverse Stage D: Scratch below the L of LIBERTY is now a heavy gouge that is close to the rim. Die crack east from the V of VDB arcing upward and back to the bust near the last fold. Die crack on the shoulder area of the jacket. NE/SW die crack on the head below the upper hair. Weaker, mushy mint mark. Obverse Stage E: Die crack at jacket extends into the field. Very weak mint mark. Obverse Stage F: Die crack into field is very heavy. Mint mark is heavily abraded. Reverse Stage A: Curving die scratch from the upper right hand area of the M in UNUM, which follows close to the rim and ending before the wheat lines begin. Die Markers:Obverse Stage A: Secondary mint mark is full and thick on the west side. Irregular die scratches between the 9 and 2 of the date. Obverse Stage B: The B of LIBERTY is partially filled on both loops and stronger on the lower loop. N/S polishing marks on the back of the head. Thin secondary mint mark on the left side. Stage A scratches still present. Reverse Stage A: Light die scratch above the R of PLURIBUS. Reverse Stage B: Die gouge inside the upper area of the second U in UNUM. N/S die scratch to the left upper area of the M in UNUM.
Die Markers:Obverse Stage A: Lathe marks around the circumference of the die and close to the rim, except on the right side. Very heavy lathe gouge between the bust and rim from about 5:00 to 6:00 caused by improper chucking on the reducing lathe. Heavy die chip at below the vest and closer to the rim caused by metal being dragged by the lathe cutting tool. Heavy die gouge through the W of WE, NE from the rim. Obverse Stage B: Lathe marks polished away. Lathe gouge much weaker from die polishing. Chip below the bust much weaker. Gouge through the W of WE polished to a single gouge. Obverse Stage C: Lathe gouge very weak. Gouge at the W of WE no longer goes through the W and only touches the upper left side. Reverse Stage A: N/S die gouges near the rim primarily between 11:00 and 2:00. These marks may be the results of lathe chatter. Reverse Stage B: Stage A markers present but weaker. Reverse Stage C: Most stage A markers present but very weak.

Die Markers:Obverse Stage A: The obverse is also a doubled die that is listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1927-D 1¢ WDDO-002. An extra eyelid shows very widely separated SE of the primary eyelid. Two parallel die scratches run west to east across the upper forehead. Some lesser die scratches can be found in the hair above the forehead. Obverse Stage B: The secondary eyelid and the RPM are both weaker. Abrasion shows between the letters of IGWT and the rim. Obverse Stage C: The secondary eyelid is now very weak. The lower part of the secondary mintmark is nearly abraded away. Abrasion doubling shows above the letters of IGWT. Reverse Stage A: A die gouge (dot) shows in the field below the left side of the C in CENT. A short die scratch runs NE from the upper left N in UNITED. A short die scratch protrudes SW from the lower left leg of the R in AMERICA. Reverse Stage B: Light north to south abrasion lines show above UNUM. Reverse Stage C: Very heavy north to south abrasion lines show above and between the letters of UNUM.
