1955-D 1¢ WDDO-001          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A strong Class I CCW spread shows on the 19 of the date, Lincoln’s eye, the lower ear, and the center fold of the vest.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Two parallel die scratches run NW from the tops of the 1 and 9 to Lincoln’s beard.  Short die scratches run NNE from the bottom inside of the 9.  A die scratch runs SW to NE to the left of the top of the head.  Obverse Stage B:  A die crack runs WNW to ESE across the shoulder.  Obverse Stage C:  Earlier stage die scratches are now very weak.  A die crack runs NW and then west from the eyebrow.  Reverse Stage A:  A short die scratch runs SW to NE to the left of the upper C of CENT.  A short die scratch runs SSW to NNE to the left of the lower C of CENT.  A short die scratch runs south from the bottom left of the C in CENT.  Reverse Stage B:  A small die chip can be found on the T of CENT.  Reverse Stage C:  Earlier stage die scratches are no longer visible.  Two small die gouges can be found above the upper right wheat stem.  A small die gouge can be found below the upper right wheat stem.

Description:  Doubling shows as an extra eyelid to the south of the normal eyelid.  

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Stage A:  A horizontal die scratch shows below the first 5 in the date.  A die scratch runs northwest from the upper left corner of the mint mark.  A series of die scratches run southeast from Lincoln’s chin.  A die scratch runs ESE from the front of Lincoln’s eyebrow.  A die scratch runs northeast from Lincoln’s forehead. A diagonal die scratch runs between the letters G and O in GOD.  A series of diagonal die scratches run through the TY in LIBERTY.  Stage B:  Most Stage A die markers are visible, but much weaker.  Reverse:  Stage A:  Horizontal die scratches show through and below the letters RIBUS in PLURIBUS.  Numerous horizontal die scratches run through the letter E in ONE and the letters ENT of CENT.  A series of horizontal die scratches show inside the lower opening of the N in UNITED.  A horizontal die scratch runs west from the tip of the right wheat stem.  Stage B:  Most Stage A die markers are visible, but much weaker.

1955-D 1¢ WDDO-003  

Description:  Doubling shows as an extra eyelid to the south of the normal eyelid.  

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Stage A:  A diagonal die scratch shows to the left of the mint mark.  A short, diagonal die scratch shows above the 1 and 9 in the date.  A long die scratch runs southwest from the lower Y in LIBERTY.  A series of diagonal die scratches show behind Lincoln’s lower bust.  A diagonal die scratch shows in the field right of Lincoln’s upper forehead.  Numerous short die scratches run northeast from Lincoln’s mouth and the bridge of his nose.  A series of horizontal die scratches show to the left of IN.  A horizontal die scratch runs above the letter O in GOD.  A short, diagonal die scratch shows below the letters T and R in TRUST.  Stage B:  All Stage A die markers are present, but weaker.  Stage C:  Most Stage A die markers are either becoming very weak or are worn away.  The die scratch to the left of the mint mark is extremely weak, but still visible.  The die scratch southwest from the lower Y in LIBERTY and the die diagonal scratch below the letters T and R in TRUST are still visible.  Reverse:  Stage A:  Die scratches connect the left wheat tip to the letter E in E PLURIBUS.  Light, vertical die scratches show between the O and N in ONE.  A series of “tooth-like,” die scratches show along the lower edge of the diagonal crossbar of the N in ONE.  Vertical die scratches run through the CE in CENT.  Strong vertical die scratches show to the right of the T in CENT.  A series of mostly vertical die scratches show to the northwest of the U in UNITED.  Diagonal die scratches show to the left of the O in OF.  Strong die scratches run through the letters E and S in STATES and last A in AMERICA.  Stage B:  All Stage A die markers are visible, but weaker.  A light die crack shows on the outer edge of the upper left wheat stalk.  Stage C:  Most Stage A die markers are extremely weak or worn away.  Remaining markers from Stage A include the die scratches between the left wheat tip and E in E PLURIBUS, the die scratches left of the letter O in OF, the vertical die scratches between the letters O and N in ONE, and a few of the vertical die scratches running through the letters E and S in STATES.  A curved die crack running to the rim and a die chip show on the upper left wheat lines.

Description:  Extra eyelids can be found to the north and south of the normal eyelid.  

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A small die gouge (dot) shows to the left of the lower mint mark.  A die gouge (dot) shows well south of the letter B in LIBERTY.  The master hub die scratches can be found below T in LIBERTY and behind Lincoln’s head.  A short diagonal die scratch shows to the right of the letter E in WE.  A light, vertical die scratch shows in Lincoln’s hair below and between the E in WE and the first T in TRUST.  A long, mostly horizontal, wavering die scratch runs through lower S and below the last T in TRUST.  A short horizontal die scratch shows below the S in TRUST.  Reverse:  A vertical die scratch runs north from the right edge of the left wheat tip.  Vertical die scratches run south below the letter O in ONE.  Nearly vertical die scratches show between the lower E in ONE and the T in CENT.  A die gouge (dot) shows to the right of T in CENT.  Vertical die scratches connect the N in UNITED with the lower C in CENT.  A light vertical die scratch shows below the F in OF.  A nearly vertical die scratch connects the second T in STATES to C in AMERICA.

1955-D 1¢ WDDO-005  

Description:  Doubling shows as an extra eyelid to the south of the normal eyelid.  Doubling also shows south of the left edge of the horizontal crossbar of the first T in TRUST.  

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die gouge runs northeast from the top of Lincoln’s hair below and between the letters E in WE and first T in TRUST.  Light diagonal die scratches run through the 19 in the date.  A curving diagonal die scratch runs from the field through the top left side of the 9, through the middle of the first 5, and through the lower portion of the second 5 in the date.  A long die scratch runs southeast from the front of Lincoln’s hair curl.  A vertical die scratch runs north from the upper R in LIBERTY.  Light diagonal die scratches show below the letters T and Y in LIBERTY.  A curved die gouge shows below the letter R in LIBERTY.  A concentric die scratch runs horizontally on the truncation of Lincoln’s bust through and right of the VDB initials.  Reverse:  A vertical die scratch runs north from the left wheat tip into the E in E PLURIBUS.  A light vertical die scratch shows between and below the letters B and U in PLURIBUS.  A series of horizontal die scratches run between the letters O and N in ONE.  A diagonal die scratch runs northeast from the right edge of the upper left wheat stalk.  A long, mostly vertical die scratch shows to the left of the C in CENT.  Vertical and horizontal die scratches show between the letters E and N in CENT.  A series of diagonal die scratches show around the T in CENT.  Vertical die scratches show to the left of the U in UNITED.  Diagonal die scratches run NNE/SSW through the letters C and A in AMERICA.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Strong diagonal and horizontal die scratches run through the date.  A group of hair-like, diagonal die scratches show below Lincoln’s chin.  A wavering, mostly vertical die scratch shows behind Lincoln’s bust.  A series of diagonal die scratches show above LIBERTY.  Multidirectional die scratches show below IN.  A light die scratch connects the front of Lincoln’s hair curl to the U in TRUST.  Reverse:  Strong, mostly diagonal die scratches run through the letters IBUS in PLURIBUS.  Numerous, mostly horizontal die scratches run through and right of the letters in ONE.  Numerous horizontal die scratches run through the letters C and E in CENT.  A series of diagonal die scratches overlay horizontal die scratches to the right of the T in CENT.  Numerous, mostly horizontal die scratches run through the letters in UNITED.  A diagonal die scratch shows below the N in UNITED.  A series of diagonal die scratches show below OF.

Description:  Two extra eyelids show to the south.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch shows southeast of the mint mark, running NNE/SSW.  A long die scratch runs NNE from the second 5 in the date.  Vertical die scratches run north from IB in LIBERTY.  A die scratch runs SW/NE well under TY in LIBERTY.  Light vertical die scratches are present at the front of the neck.  Reverse:  A heavy die scratch runs NNW/SSE between NT in CENT.  A vertical die scratch runs through the lower right side of E in STATES.

Description:  An extra eyelid can be found below the normal eyelid.  Doubling also shows to the west on both T's and the U in TRUST.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die gouge (dot) present below bowtie.  NW/SE scratch present at back of head.  Die gouge (dot) present between N in IN and G in GOD.  Dot left of S in TRUST.  Reverse:  Concentric scratch at rim above PLURIBUS UNUM.  Short concentric scratches are present throughout the reverse.  Die gouge present right of top of T in CENT.  Curved gouge present above the right side of the last T in STATES.  Curved gouge present below the last A in AMERICA.
