1970-S 1¢ WDDO-001         "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A very strong Class I CW spread shows on the letters of LIBERTY, IGWT, and the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Numerous die scratches run from SW to NE through the letters of WE and between WE and TRUST.  A vertical die scratch can be found above the E in LIBERTY.  A die scratch runs NE from the mint mark through the lower 7 and the upper left zero in the date.  A die scratch runs from north to south below the chin.  Reverse:  A die scratch runs SE from the top right of the 2nd T in STATES to the top right of the 1st U in PLURIBUS.  A short, diagonal die gouge can be found to the right of the top of the M in UNUM.  A die gouge can be found to the left of the bottom of the T in CENT.  A short die scratch runs from SSW to NNE in the field below the Memoial and left of the left post.

Comments:  This is without doubt one of the rarest of the major Lincoln cent doubled die varieties.  Only a few dozen specimens of this variety have been reported over the years.






















1970-S 1¢ WDDO-002

Description:  A close Class I CW spread shows on IGWT, the zero in the date, and the L in LIBERTY.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Two parallel die scratches run NNW from the horizontal bar of the L in LIBERTY.  A die scratch runs south from the bottom of the I in LIBERTY.  A long die scratch twists NNW from the top of the E in LIBERTY.  A die gouge runs ESE from the rim to the left of the W in WE.  Parallel die scratches run from NW to SE through and below the U in TRUST.  Obverse Stage B:  Only the die scratches from the horizontal bar of the L in LIBERTY remain.  A small die gouge can be found above the left side of the D in GOD.  A die gouge can be found to the right of the S in TRUST.  Reverse Stage A:  A die scratch runs from WSW to ENE about 1/3 of the way up from the bottom of the first bay.  Numerous other die scratches can be found throughout the reverse.  A small die gouge (dot) can be found in the upper steps below the 4th bay.  Reverse Stage B:  Only the die scratch in the 1st bay remains.  A small die gouge can be found below the A in STATES while another can be found below the E in EPU.

1970-S 1¢ Pr WDDO-003        "Best Of" Variety

Description:  This variety is a Large Date hubbed over a Small Date.  The doubling shows as strong extra thickness to the date, the letters of LIBERTY, and the letters of IGWT.

1970-S 1¢ WDDO-004

Description:  Doubling shows below the horizontal bar of the L in LIBERTY.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Two parallel die scratches run SSW from the bottoms of the R and T in LIBERTY.  A die scratch runs from SSW to NNE north of the T in LIBERTY.  A die gouge can be found on the vest SW of the 1 in the date.  Reverse:  A die gouge can be found on the upper part of the vertical bar of the T in LIBERTY.

1970-S 1¢ WDDO-005        "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A Class II spread towards the center shows on the letters of LIBERTY.  On early die state specimens some slight doubling can also be seen on the lower 0 in the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die crack runs down the lower half of the nine and then east to the top of the mint mark.  Reverse:  A die gouge can be found near the rim to the right of the designer’s initials.

Comments:  This variety was first published as 1970-S 1¢ 5-O-II in The Lincoln Cent Doubled Die published in 1984.  Later it was listed as 22-O-II in the CONECA Files.  This was changed at a later date to 10-O-II when CONECA revamped their Lincoln cent doubled die files.  It is possible that specimens are still on the market with those old listing numbers.










1970-S 1¢ Pr WDDO-006        "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A nice Class I CCW spread shows on the letters of LIBERTY, IGWT, and the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A short die gouge can be found at the rim above the 1st T in TRUST.  Several short die gouges extend from the rim below the bust.  A short die gouge extends from the rim to the left of the base of the shoulder.  Reverse:  A short die scratch runs parallel to the rim above the T in UNITED.

1970-S 1¢ WDDO-007

Description:  Doubling shows below the horizontal bar of the L in LIBERTY and above the horizontal bar of the 7 in the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A strong die gouge runs from WSW to ENE below the front of the bust.  This die gouge is visible on all five stages of this variety.  Numerous light die scratches run from SW to NE through and below IN GOD.  Numerous light die scratches run from north to south to the right of the throat and bowtie.  Obverse Stage B:  The Stage A die scratches have been abraded away.  Numerous die scratches run from SW to NE throughout the obverse.  Obverse Stage C:  Die clash marks from two Memorial bays can be seen to the left of the back of the neck.  Two short, strong die scratches run NNE from the top of the E in LIBERTY.  Several short die scratches run from SW to NE between the L and I in LIBERTY.  Numerous other die scratches run mostly from north to south throughout the obverse.  Obverse Stage D:  The die has been heavily abraded removing the die clash marks and most Stage C die scratches.  Long die scratches run SW from the N of IN and the G in GOD.  Numerous die scratches run from NW to SE through the date.  Numerous die scratches run from SW to NE to the right of the upper head.  A small die gouge can be found south of the zero in the date.  Obverse Stage E:  A die crack runs from SSW to NNE through the upper hair passing through the center of the W in WE and out to the rim.  Reverse Stage A:  Two short, vertical die gouges can be found to the left of the U in UNITED.  A die gouge can be found above the left side of the 1st U in PLURIBUS.  A horizontal die scratch runs through the steps on the right Memorial base.  Numerous other die scratches can be found throughout the reverse.  Reverse Stage B:  Most Stage A markers are considerably weaker.  Reverse Stage C:  A different reverse die has been paired with the obverse.  A die gouge runs NNE from the top right of the 2nd column to the Memorial ceiling.  A short die scratch runs from SSW to NNE in the lower 2nd bay.  Reverse Stage D:  The die gouge from the top of the 2nd column is much weaker.  Reverse Stage E:  Same as Stage D.

Description:  Doubling shows above the horizontal bar of the 7 in the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die scratches run north from the tops of the R, T, and Y in LIBERTY.  A die scratch runs NNE from the bridge of the nose.  Reverse:  Die pitting can be found to the right of the bottom of the I in UNITED.  Parallel die scratches run from SW to NE between the D in UNITED and the 1st S in STATES.  Die scratches run from north to south in the 10th bay and on the left side of the right Memorial base.  Other die scratches can be found throughout the reverse.

1970-S 1¢ WDDO-009        "Best Of" Variety

Description:  Doubling shows under the horizontal bar of the 7 and below the 0.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A long, nearly vertical die scratch can be found north of the left side of the T in LIBERTY.  Obverse Stage B:  Numerous die scratches run from SW to NE in the fields to the left and to the right of the bust.  Obverse Stage C:  The die has been heavily abraded removing the previous stage die scratches.  A die gouge can be found to the right of the bottom of the 7.  Light die scratches run from SW to NE to the right of the beard.  Reverse Stage A:  EDS.  None significant.  Reverse Stage B:  A die gouge can be found to the right of the top of the 4th column.  A die gouge can be found above the left side of the E in CENT.  Nearly vertical die scratches run through, and to the right of the S in PLURIBUS.  A die scratch runs from NNW to SSE through the top right of the E in ONE.  Other die scratches can be found throughout the reverse.  Reverse Stage C:  The die has been heavily abraded removing most of the previous stage die scratches.  The die scratch through the top right of the E in ONE is still present.  The die gouge above the left side of the E is still there, but the die gouge to the right of the top of the 4th column has been abraded away.

1970-S 1¢ WDDO-010

Description:  Tripling shows above the horizontal bar of the 7 in the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Strong die clash marks can be found to the left of the back of the neck.  A die clash mark can be found below the front of the chin.  Numerous die scratches run from SW to NE to the left of the bust.  Obverse Stage B:  The die clash marks are weaker.  The die has been abraded creating new die scratch patterns to the left of the bust.  Two parallel die scratches run from SW to NE to the right of the lower N of IN.  Numerous other die scratches can be found throughout the obverse.  Reverse Stage A:  A short, strong die gouge runs north from the upper right D in UNITED.  Short, strong die scratches run north from the top right of the Memorial roof.  Numerous other die scratches can be found throughout the reverse.  Reverse Stage B:  Two die gouges form a semi-colon between the tops of the N and I in UNITED.

1970-S 1¢ WDDO-011          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  Doubling shows under the horizontal bar of the 7 and below the top of the 0.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A horizontal die scratch connects the tops of the 9 and the 7 in the date.  Obverse Stage B:  Strong die clash marks can be found to the left of the back of the neck along with a horizontal line that connects the lower one in the date to the bust.  Numerous die scratches run mostly SSW/NNE to the left and right of the bust.  Reverse Stage A:  A die clash left an incuse inverted Y in the upper second Memorial bay.  A small die gouge can be found below the left Memorial base.  Reverse Stage B:  The Stage A die markers are no longer visible.

Description:  Doubling shows under the horizontal bar of the 7 and below the top and bottom of the 0.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A twisting die gouge runs mostly SSW/NNE through the back of the forehead.  Obverse Stage B:  The die has been heavily abraded with numerous die scratches running mostly SW/NE all around the bust.  Reverse Stage A:  A small die gouge touches the bottom left of the D in UNITED.  Reverse Stage B:  The reverse has been heavily abraded creating a “detached roof” on the left side of the Memorial.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Several die scratches extend NE from the bowtie.  Numerous other die scratches run mostly SW/NE throughout the obverse.  Obverse Stage B:  The Stage A die scratches are now very weak or no longer visible.  A small die gouge (dot) can be found between the tops of the L and the I in LIBERTY.  Reverse Stage A:  A small die gouge can be found at the top of the second A in AMERICA.  Reverse Stage B:  Same as Stage A.

Description:  A Class I CCW spread shows on IGWT, LIBERTY, and the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Three die scratches run SW/NE below the 70 in the date.  A short heavy die scratch runs SSE from the lower right of the B in LIBERTY.  Several die scratches run NNW/SSE near the front of the neck.  A long die scratch runs NNW from the upper left of the T in LIBERTY to the I of IN.  Numerous other die scratches can be found to the right of the bowtie.  Obverse Stage B:  The die scratches below the 70 in the date are gone.  The die scratch from the B in LIBERTY is much weaker.  The die scratch from the T in LIBERTY is gone.  The die scratches on the neck and to the right of the bowtie are much weaker.  The die scratches through IGWT and in the field to the left of the head have been replaced with a new die scratch pattern.  Reverse Stage A:  Several die scratches run SW/NE to the right of the T in CENT.  Reverse Stage B:  The Stage A die scratches are very weak.

Description:  Doubling shows above the horizontal bar of the 7 in the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Two strong die gouges extend NE from the rim above the L in LIBERTY.  A die gouge extends ESE from the rim above the left side of the G in GOD.  Obverse Stage B:  The die has been heavily abraded.  The two strong die gouges from the rim above the L in LIBERTY are no longer visible.  The die gouge extends from the rim above the G in GOD is very weak but still visible.  A SW/NE die scratch can be found to the right of the zero in the date.   Reverse Stage A:  Die scratches curve from NW to SE to the left of the P in PLURIBUS and the 1st U in UNUM.  A horizontal die scratch can be found under the PLU in PLURIBUS.  Numerous die scratches, mostly horizontal, run through the letters of ONE CENT.  Reverse Stage B:  The die has been heavily abraded.  Only traces of the Stage A die scratches remain.  Numerous die scratches, mostly SSW to NNE, run through the letters of ONE CENT and the rest of the reverse.

Description:  A strong spread towards the rim shows on LIBERTY.  A closer spread shows on the date and very close doubling shows on IGWT.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Small Date.  The upper nose is flat from heavy abrading of the die.  The mint mark is closer to the 9 and farther from the 7 than what is seen on WDDO-033.  Reverse:  None noted.

Description:  Doubling shows on the underside of the zero in the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Large Date.  Die scratches run NW/SE between the date and the front of the vest.  Parallel die scratches run NW/SE above LIBERTY.  Reverse:  Die scratches run NW/SE to the left of the Memorial.  The die has been heavily abraded to the point where the statue of Lincoln is completely missing.

Description:  An extra horizontal bar can be found below the horizontal bar of the 7 and slight doubling can be found under the 0.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Large Date.  Two parallel die scratches run SW to NE between the lower N of IN and the G of GOD.  A short, vertical die scratch can be found the bottoms of the S and T in TRUST.  The mint mark is positioned lower than on any other similar 1970-S varieties.  Reverse:  A long die scratch runs parallel to the left side of the 1st Memorial column.  A short die gouge can be found between the lower R and I of AMERICA.  Die scratches run NNW to SSE to the left and right of the lower last Memorial column.  A die scratch runs north to south on the inside of the C of CENT.  Numerous die scratches run through the N and T of CENT.
