1944-D 1¢ WRPM-001          “Best of” Variety

Description:  D/D North

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A short die scratch runs WSW from the bottom of the 9.  A short die scratch runs from WSW to ENE to the left of the top of the mint mark.  A die scratch runs ENE from the bottom tight of the bust.  A die scratch runs NE from below the previous die scratch.  Obverse Stage B:  The Stage A die scratches are no longer visible.  A die chip can be found on the lower left side of the diagonal bar of the second 4 in the date.  Reverse Stage A:  A die scratch runs SE from the bottom right of the E in ONE.  Two short die scratches run SW from the lower left of the N in CENT.  A die scratch runs SW from the bottom right leg of the R in AMERICA.  Reverse Stage B:  The die has been abraded to the point where the Stage A die scratches are no longer visible.  A small die gouge can be found just to the right of the top of the E in ONE.

1944-D 1¢ WRPM-002         “Best of” Variety

Description:  D/D Northeast

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die scratches across Lincoln’s coat.  Die scratches above the Y of LIBERTY.  Slanted die scratch below Lincoln’s ear.  Die scratch on Lincoln’s collar to the upper left of his bow tie.  Reverse:  Die crack from the rim running SW to the right edge of the right wheat stalk.

1944-D 1¢ WRPM-003         “Best of” Variety

Description:  D/D North

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  The obverse of this die variety is also a doubled die that is listed in the Wexler Files as 1944-D 1¢ WDDO-022.  It has two eyelids south of the normal eyelid.  Parallel die scratches run west to east on Lincoln’s cheek to the right of his lower ear.  E/W die scratch on his collar to the upper left of his bow tie.  Obverse Stage B:  Die crack runs north to south through the lower shoulder.  Obverse Stage C:  Die crack starts above the V of VDB running east continues to nearly the end of the bust.  Reverse Stage A:  A die scratch runs north from the top left of the U in UNITED.  A small die gouge (dot) can be found inside the upper D in UNITED.  A small die gouge can be found to the left of the T of CENT.  Reverse Stage B:  The Stage A die scratch is no longer visible.  Reverse Stage C:  New reverse die.  A die crack runs north from the left side of the O of ONE through the L in PLURIBUS to the rim.  A die crack runs north from the top left side of the E in ONE.  A die scratch runs NE from the lower E in ONE.

1944-D 1¢ WRPM-004

Description:  D/D Tilted (Rotated)

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  The obverse of this variety is also a doubled die that is listed in the Wexler files as 1944-D 1¢ WDDO-021, an extra eyelid south of the normal eyelid.  Series of wavy die gouges to the upper right of the Y of LIBERTY.  Two die gouges below the O in GOD.  Die scratch to the lower right of the E of WE.  A light die crack runs along the base of the bust above the designer’s initials.  Obverse Stage B:  Stronger chipped die crack over the designer’s initials.  Reverse Stage A:  Two light die scratches below the O in OF.  A die gouge can be found to the right of the 2nd S in STATES.  Reverse Stage B:  Die gouge at the 2nd S in STATES abraded away.  NW/SE die scratch through the first U in PLURIBUS.

1944-D 1¢ WRPM-006

Description:  D/D Tilted (Rotated)

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die crack above VDB and on Lincoln’s shoulder.  Die scratch extends from the lower portion of the 1 of the date to Lincoln’s vest.  Reverse:  Die crack through the left side of N of ONE to the I of PLURIBUS.  Die scratch on the inside upper right portion of the O of ONE.

1944-D 1¢ WRPM-007         “Best of” Variety

Description:  D/D North

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Feeder finger marks run from SW to NE in the field at the back of the neck.  A long die scratch runs NNE from the top of the second 4 in the date.  Series of slanted die scratches below Lincoln’s ear.  Obverse Stage B:  The Stage A feeder finger marks are no longer visible nor is the die scratch from the 4.  A die crack runs NNE from the bottom left corner of the bust running through Lincoln’s shoulder and ending near the collar.  Obverse Stage C:  Same as Stage B.  Reverse Stage A:  Horizontal die scratch above NE of ONE.  A long die scratch runs SSW from the bottom of the 2nd U in PLURIBUS through the N in ONE, to the left of the N in CENT, ending at the top of the D in UNITED.  Reverse Stage B:  The die scratch from the U in PLURIBUS is no longer visible.  Die chip between the second and third kernel of the left wheat stalk.  Reverse Stage C:  Die crack on upper left wheat stalk.

Description:  D/D Northwest

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Two short die scratches under the W of WE.  Two die scratches between the 1 & 9 in date forming an X.  Obverse Stage B:  Die crack starting between the DB of VDB running east.  A short die scratch inside the upper Y of LIBERTY.  Reverse Stage A:  Vertical die scratches around the ES of states.  Die scratches to the right of the last A of AMERICA.  Vertical die scratches to the left of the T of CENT.  Reverse Stage B:  Die scratch runs through the second dot between the S of PLURIBUS and the first U of UNUM.

Description:  D/D North

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A die scratch runs north from the top front of the bowtie.  A die scratch can be found inside the O in GOD.  Obverse Stage B:  The die scratch from the top front of the bowtie can no longer be seen.  Reverse Stage A:  A die scratch runs from SW to NE to the right of the lower E of ONE.  Reverse Stage B:  The Stage A die scratch can no longer be seen.

Description:  D/D Tilted (Rotated)

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A: Die gouge in the field, west from the upper area of the first T in TRUST.  Obverse Stage B: Die crack NE from the ear that turns into a nearly oval die crack.  Primary mint mark is weak on the lower area.  Reverse Stage A: WNW/ESE die scratches through UN of UNITED.  Reverse Stage B: Small die gouge in the field west from center of the T in CENT.

1944-D 1¢ WRPM-012

Description:  D/D West

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A circular pattern of die scratches centered on the lower cheek can be found on Lincoln’s neck, coat, and collar.  A die scratch runs SE from the top of Lincoln’s forehead.  Die crack starting to the left of and above the VDB running east on the base of the bust.  Obverse Stage B:  Die crack to the left of VDB continues south into the rim, the die crack is thicker.  Reverse Stage A:  A circular pattern of die scratches runs through the letters of ONE CENT.  Reverse Stage B:  Same as Stage A but die scratches are weaker.

Description:  D/D Tilted (Rotated)

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Die scratch above and between the 9 and the 4 of the date.  Die scratch above Lincoln’s ear.  Slanted die scratches to the right of Lincoln’s nose.  Obverse Stage B:  A die crack runs from SW to NE in the hair above Lincoln’s ear.  Reverse Stage A:  The reverse of this variety is a doubled die that is listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1944-D 1¢ WDDR-001.  A Class IV spread to the south shows on the N of ONE, the CE of CENT, and the top of the T in UNITED.  A die scratch runs parallel to the rim through the upper E PLU of EPU.  Reverse Stage B:  A die scratch extends NW from the top right of the U in UNITED.  A small die gouge (dot) can be found under the E of UNITED.  A small die gouge protrudes from the upper right first T of STATES.

Comments:  Both CONECA and Coppercoins list the doubled die reverse, but not the RPM.  The RPM is very minor in contrast to the doubled die so the value for this variety would come primarily from the doubled die.  The photos of this variety were taken by Brian Ribar for the Wexler RPM Files.








1944-D 1¢ WRPM-016

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A strong die scratch runs from SW to NE inside the ear.  A light die crack runs from WSW to ENE starting in the hair above the ear and ending at the back of the forehead.  Parallel die scratches run from SSW to NNE below the ear.  Reverse:  Parallel horizontal die scratches run through the E & P of EPU.  A strong die gouge can be found between the U and S of PLURIBUS.

Die Markers:  Obverse:   None significant. Reverse:  None significant.

Comments:  This variety was originally listed as WRPM-015.  For some unknown reason the listing was either lost or deleted by John Bordner during his tenure as the RPM attributer for the Wexler RPM Files, and it was replaced with the current WRPM-015.  This is a very nice RPM variety so I am restoring it to the RPM listings with this new listing number.




1944-D 1¢ WRPM-024

Description:  D/D South

Die Markers:  Obverse:   Remnants of a die clash can be found at the front of the throat.  A die scratch runs east from the bowtie.  A small die gouge can be found just to the right of the lower lip. Reverse:  A short die crack can be found on the lower T in CENT.  Two die chips can be found on the lower right wheat stalk.
