1940-D 1¢ WRPM-001          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  D/D Northwest

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A die scratch runs from SW to NE through the front of the vest below the 19.  A strong die scratch runs through the bottom of the hair just above the front of the forehead.  Obverse Stage B:  Same as Stage A.  Obverse Stage C:  A die crack is seen at the base of the bust.  Reverse Stage A:  None significant.  Reverse Stage B:  A die chip is seen in the first N in UNUM.  A die crack runs from the U in UNUM SW to the rim.  Reverse Stage C:  Same as Stage B.

1940-D 1¢ WRPM-002          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  D/D North

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A: Primary mint mark is positioned slightly higher than WRPM-003 and leans slightly.  Light short die scratch south from the bottom of the 4 in the date.  Short heavy die scratches from the upper rear of the head.  NW/SE die scratch in the field behind the collar.  Two E/W die gouges below the front of the bust.  Strong secondary mint mark.  Obverse Stage B: All die Stage A die markers abraded away except for the scratches above the head and behind the collar.  Strong secondary mint mark still present.  Obverse Stage C: All previous markers abraded away.  Weaker secondary mint mark showing remnants on the upper left and the vertical bar.  Weak E/W die crack through the center of the head and hair that turns southwest on the left side.  Obverse Stage D: Very weak remnant of the secondary mint mark to the upper left.  Reverse Stage A: No prominent die markers.  Reverse Stage B: NE/SW die scratch at right center of the C of CENT.  Very fine weak die scratches in the field.  Reverse Stage C: No prominent die markers.  Reverse Stage D: No prominent die markers.

1940-D 1¢ WRPM-003         "Best Of" Variety

Description:  D/D Northwest

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A: Primary mint mark is positioned lower than WRPM-002.  Short N/S die scratch inside the lower area of the last fold.  Strong secondary mint mark.  Obverse Stage B: Medium secondary mint mark showing a weak to the north.  Stage A markers still present but weaker.  Reverse Stage A: Short die scratch south from the upper right of the E in AMERICA.  Reverse Stage B: Stage A markers still present but weaker.

1940-D 1¢ WRPM-004

Description:  D/D Southeast

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A: Primary mint mark is positioned higher than WRPM-007.  Light die scratches south through the date and mint mark. Strong die scratch west from the upper left of the R in TRUST that runs above the first T in TRUST and then becomes thinner and runs along the rim and ends above the O in GOD.  Die scratch from the lower right center of the O in GOD running ESE to the D in GOD.  Light E/W die scratches throughout the motto.  Strong secondary mint mark.  Obverse Stage B: E/W die scratches through the motto are abraded away.  Die scratches at the date are weak and show mostly at the 19.  Die scratch from the R in TRUST shows mostly at the R.  Weaker secondary mint mark best seen with low magnification.  Reverse Stage A: Very light, fine NNW/SSE die scratches in the field.  Reverse Stage B: Stage A die scratches abraded away.

1940-D 1¢ WRPM-005

Description:  D/D South

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A: Primary mint mark is positioned lower than WRPM-006.  Strong secondary mint mark.  Obverse Stage B: Weak secondary mint mark that shows only on the lower left.  Obverse Stage C: Weak and mushy secondary mint mark that shows to the lower left.  Reverse Stage A: Die scratch NE from the lower right of the P in PLURIBUS.  Reverse Stage B: None visible.  Circulated specimen was examined.  Reverse Stage C: None visible.  Circulated specimen was examined.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Primary mintmark is positioned higher than WRPM-005.  Short NW/SE die gouge at the upper right of the lower opening of the R in TRUST.  Reverse:  None visible.  Circulated specimen was examined.

Description:  D/D Southeast

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A: Primary mint mark is positioned lower than WRPM-004.  Circular die scratch connecting from the first T in TRUST at the very top running west through WE and then continuing above GOD.  NNW die scratch from about top center of the mint mark to the center of the date.  Strong secondary mint mark.  Obverse Stage B: Only weak remnants of the scratches at the motto remain.  Weak secondary mint mark.  Reverse Stage A: Light die scratch from lower left center of the N of UNUM to the rim.  Reverse Stage B: Stage A markers abraded away.

Description:  D/D Tilted (Rotated)

Die Markers:  Obverse:  NE/SW die crack in the hair and head positioned below WE.  Die crack in the hair branches into a Y at the SW side.  Reverse: Weak die scratch north from the lower inside of the O in OF.  Weak die scratch NNW from the left upper side of the O in OF to the top of the U in UNITED.  Small die chip (dot) at the right side of the left wheat ear positioned slightly below center of the O in OF.

Description:  D/D Tilted (Rotated)

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Dual N/S die scratches in the field in front of the lips.  Die scratches running NE is seen on both sides of the 1 of date.  Two short die scratches run south from the bottom of the 1 in date.  Reverse:  Die chip on the E of ONE.
