1942 (P, D, S) 1¢ Obverse Master Hub Markers:  

Description:  A die scratch shows near the rim between S and T in TRUST, positioned slightly closer to the S.  A die scratch runs horizontally from the top of the crossbar of the 4 to the left side of the 2 in the date.  The die scratch at the date is worn away in later die state examples.

1942-S 1¢ WDDO-001          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A Class IV spread to the south shows on the letters of IN GOD, the date, the BERTY of LIBERTY, Lincoln’s eyelid, and the upper part of Lincoln’s earlobe.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse has a strong repunched mint mark (RPM) which is listed as WRPM-002 and as RPM #1 in the CONECA RPM Files.  A die scratch extends SE from the lower right 1st T of TRUST.  A long die scratch extends north from the top of the R in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  Two long, parallel die scratches run north to south to the left of the T in CENT.  Two short die scratches run north from the top left T of CENT.  A short, strong die scratch runs from SSE to NNW to the left of the upper C in CENT.

1942-S 1¢ WDDO-002         "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A strong Class IV spread to the SW shows on IGWT, the date, and on Lincoln’s vest.  Tripling shows on the letters of TRUST, especially the lower U.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A long die scratch extends north from the Y of LIBERTY.  A die crack runs across the base of the bust.  Reverse:  The reverse is a minor doubled die is listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1942-S 1¢ WDDR-003.  A die scratch runs south from the bottom left of the O in OF to the top of the left wheat stem.

1942-S 1¢ WDDO-003  

Description:  An extra bar shows below the normal crossbar of the L in LIBERTY.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Stage A:  The obverse is also an RPM listed in the Wexler RPM files as 1942-S 1¢ WRPM-035.  A strong die gouge (dot) shows to the left of the lower 1 in the date.  A die gouge (dot) shows southwest of the lower tip of the 9 in the date.  A die gouge (dot) shows southeast of the mint mark.  Light die scratches run south from the G in GOD.  A series of mostly horizontal die scratches run through and left of the upper letters in WE.  A horizontal die scratch runs below the US in TRUST.  A horizontal die scratch shows at the rim NE of the S in TRUST.  About vertical die scratches show on BERT in LIBERTY.  A diagonal die scratch runs through the lower edge of Lincoln’s hair curl.  A concentric die scratch shows at the rim below the back of Lincoln’s bust.  Stage B:  The die gouges around the date and mint mark are still visible.  The die scratch at the hair curl is still strongly visible.  The remaining die scratches are weaker.  A die gouge (dot) shows above the I in IN.  Reverse:  Stage A:  A series of light, vertical die scratches show to the right of the upper left wheat tip.  A vertical die scratch runs between the letters I and B in PLURIBUS.  Light, vertical die scratches show on the upper T in CENT.  Light, vertical die scratches run through the U in UNITED.  A die crack shows on the central right wheat grains, right of the last S in STATES.  Stage B:  The stage A markers are still visible.  Two die gouges show in the field below the second U in UNUM.  A die crack runs from the central left wheat grains into the rim.

Description:  Doubling shows on the 942 in the date and possibly very slight doubling below the lower Y in LIBERTY.  

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Light, vertical die scratches run below the date and onto the front of Lincoln’s jacket.  Crisscrossing die scratches show right of the lower face.  A myriad of vertical die scratches run through most of the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST.  A die scratch runs along the right edge of the opening of Lincoln’s ear.  Light, diagonal die scratches show to the right of the Y in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  A series of vertical die scratches run through the left dot in the motto.  Vertical die scratch south from upper right edge of the N in UNUM.  A series of strong vertical die scratches run alongside the right arm of N in ONE.  A series of vertical die scratches run through the T in CENT.  A vertical die scratch through the opening of the C in AMERICA.  A die crack runs from rim into the left wheat stalk, left of the U in UNITED.  A die crack shows on the central right wheat stalk, southeast of last S in STATES.

1942-S 1¢ WDDO-005  

Description:  Extra eyelids show to the east and south of the normal eyelids.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A vertical die scratch runs south below the right arm of the R in LIBERTY.  A horizontal die gouge runs through Lincoln’s upper hair below WE.  Light diagonal die scratches show on the shoulder fold behind the lower lapel on Lincoln’s jacket.  Reverse:  Light vertical die scratches run through the left edge of O in ONE.  Two, parallel die scratches run north from upper right arm of the N in UNITED. A light vertical die scratch shows inside the O of OF.

1942-S 1¢ WDDR-001

Description:  Extra thickness shows on EPU, the dots, and both wheat ears.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse of this variety is an RPM listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1942-S 1¢ WRPM-011 (S/S West & S West).  Two die scratches run ESE from the upper right of the E in WE.  A die crack runs along the base of the bust.  Reverse:  None noted.

Description:  Nice extra thickness shows on EPU, both dots, both wheat ears and stems, OF AMERICA, and the outermost letters of UNITED STATES.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse is a minor RPM listed in the Wexler files as 1942-S 1¢ WRPM-034.  A diagonal die scratch shows below Lincoln’s bowtie. Light vertical die scratches show behind Lincoln’s upper hair.  A series of light, vertical die scratches run north of the letters ERT in LIBERTY.  A horizontal die scratch shows on Lincoln’s lapel below the buttonhole.  A series of short, horizontal die scratches show on Lincoln’s lower shoulder and rear shoulder fold.  Reverse:  Two vertical die scratches run inside the C in CENT.  A diagonal die scratch runs through the upper right T in CENT.  Vertical die scratches show north of the N in UNITED.  Vertical die scratches are present inside the letter D in UNITED.  A series of vertical die scratches run through the letter O in OF.  A vertical die scratch is present to the right of the second A in AMERICA.  Vertical die scratches run from below C in AMERICA to the wheat stem.

The obverse doubled die is listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1942-S 1¢ WDDO-002.  A long die scratch extends north from the Y of LIBERTY.  A die crack runs across the base of the bust.  Reverse:  Several parallel die scratches run south from IC in AMERICA toward the right wheat stem.  A die scratch runs south from the bottom left of the O in OF to the top of the left wheat stem.
