1964-D 1¢ WDDR-001          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A CW spread from a pivot at about 6:00 shows on USA, the designer’s initials, the right base of the Memorial, and EPU.  A strong Class II spread towards the center shows on ONE CENT and USA.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A: A short, heavy die scratch extends NE from Lincoln’s eyebrow.  Obverse Stage B: The die scratch from the eyebrow is still visible but it is much weaker.  Reverse Stage A: A small die gouge can be seen curving towards the roof of the Memorial below the N of UNUM.  A die scratch runs SE from the lower right N of UNUM to the roof of the Memorial below the M of UNUM.  A short die scratch runs NW to SE to the right of the statue’s head.  Reverse Stage B: The doubling has a “mushy” appearance.  All Stage A markers have been abraded away.  A small die chip can be found at the top of the 11th Memorial column.  A die crack runs down the edge of the right cornice and down the 12th column.

Submitted By:  Stage A: G.J. Lawson, Stage B: B.J. Neff

Cross References:  CONECA: 12-R-II+V, Coppercoins: 1964D-1DR-004

Comments:  Since appearing in the 1984 book The Lincoln Cent Doubled Die few specimens of this variety have been reported.  We have yet to see an uncirculated specimen of Stage A.  There is a possibility that intermediate stages may exist that might show a weakening of the Stage A markers and/or die clash marks that may have led to the heavy abrading seen on the current Stage B listing for this variety.

Comments:  There is a possible similar die gouge between E and N in CENT for 1964D-1DR-001, though it is difficult to compare the doubling due to the size of the Coppercoins photos.  If a copy of either die is found, it likely could be determined if these coins could be the same die.
