1935 1¢ WDDO-001 "Best Of" Variety Description: A strong Class V CW spread from a pivot at 4:00 shows on IGWT, Lincoln’s eyelid, the date, and Lincoln’s vest. Die Markers: Obverse Stage A: Vertical die scratches run through the date and to the right of Lincoln’s head. A die crack runs from the back of the base of the bust, loops over the designer’s initials, and curves back to the base of the bust. A die gouge extends from the left edge of the N of IN. Obverse Stage B: The Stage A markers are weak or gone. The die crack at the base of the bust extends into the field. Reverse Stage A: A vertical die scratch runs along the right side of the U of UNITED. Two die scratches run through the upper first A in AMERICA. A die scratch extends southeast from the lower E of ONE. Reverse Stage B: A northeast to southwest die scratch runs inside the upper left area of the O in ONE. A north-northwest to south-southeast die scratch can be found in the left wheat grains west from the O in OF. A die scratch runs northwest from about the center of the left side of the N in UNITED. 1935 1¢ WDDO-003 Description: Two extra eyelids can be found below the normal eyelid. A very close CW spread from a pivot at 3:00 shows on the LIBE of LIBERTY. Die Markers: Obverse: Die gouge (dot) in the hair south of WE. Die gouge (dot) in the field north of the R in LIBERTY. Die scratch NNE from the top of the L in LIBERTY. Series of weak E/W die scratches through the upper ear. Reverse: SSW die gouges near the rim at 1:30 and 2:00. Die crack down the right side of the vertical bar of the T in CENT. 1935 1¢ WDDO-004 Description: Extra thickness shows on the date and LIBERTY. Die Markers: Obverse Stage A: Series of short die scratches below the eyelid. Obverse Stage B: The die scratches below the eyelid have been abraded away. A die crack from the back of the bust loops over the V.D.B. curving back to the base of the bust and into the field. Reverse Stage A: Die scratch SW from the left side outer loop of the second S in STATES to the lower right horizontal bar of the E. Small die gouge (dot) above the second S in STATES. NE/SW die scratch through the center of the bottom horizontal bar of the E in STATES. Reverse Stage B: The Stage A die markers are gone. Two parallel die scratches extend NNE from the vest below the 1 in the date. A die scratch runs NW to SE between the R and U of TRUST. Reverse: A die scratch runs SW to NE between the upper T and E of STATES. A die scratch extends NW from the lower left D of UNITED. Die Markers: Obverse Stage A: A die gouge can be found just below the left side of the B in LIBERTY. A die gouge can be found on the inside of the lower R in LIBERTY. A die crack loops over the designer’s initials. A die crack runs SE from the lapel into the vest. Obverse Stage B: The Stage A die gouges are weaker. The die crack from the lapel runs into the bust. The die crack over the designer’s initials now extends to the rim. A light die crack runs from west to east in the hair above the ear. Reverse Stage A: A die gouge (dot) can be found between the upper C and A in AMERICA.
