Description:  A strong Class V CW spread from a pivot at about 11:00 shows on the date and the letters of LIBERTY.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A die gouge protrudes from the upper left 1st T of TRUST.  Obverse Stage B:  A short, horizontal die gouge can be found north of the I in LIBERTY.  Reverse Stage A:  None noted.  Reverse Stage B:  A small, diagonal die gouge can be found just SE of the bottom right tip of the Memorial.

1962 1¢ WDDO-002         "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A Class II spread towards the center shows on the date.  Early die state specimens also show doubling to the Y of LIBERTY.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A small die gouge can be found above and between the T and Y in LIBERTY.  A die scratch runs from the top of the T to the top of the R in TRUST.  Reverse:  A small die gouge (dot) can be found between the lower 2nd S in STATES and the O in OF.  A small die gouge (dot) can be found below the right end of the bottom horizontal bar of the F in OF.

1962 1¢ Pr WDDO-003         "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A strong CCW spread from a pivot at 10:00 shows on the date, Lincoln’s eyelid, and the letters of TRUST.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A short, diagonal die scratch can be found NE of the 2.  A die scratch runs from NW to SE well west of the bowtie.  A die scratch runs from NNW to SSE near the bottom front of the vest south of the 1 in the date.  The vest is well abraded with numerous other NNW to SSE die scratches.  Reverse:  A short, vertical die scratch can be found above the right side of the 1st T in STATES.

Comments:  As a proof variety it is highly unlikely that more than 3,000 specimens of this variety exist, as that is the average die life for a Lincoln cent proof die.  Consequently, this variety should be considered to be extremely rare.

Description:  A strong Class II spread towards the center shows on the date.  Class VI extra thickness shows on LIBERTY and IGWT.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Several vertical die scratches can be found on the front of the neck.  Reverse:  The reverse is a doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1962 1¢ Pr WDDR-028.  It shows a very close CCW spread that shows on FG and the serifs of USA and ONE CENT.  A small die gouge can be found to the right of the top of the 2nd S in STATES.  A die gouge can be found to the right of the lower 12th column.

1962 1¢ WDDO-013

Description:  Doubling shows under the vertical bar of the L in LIBERTY.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A small die gouge (dot) touches the upper right of the 9 in the date.  This die gouge is present on all known stages of this variety.  Numerous die scratches run mostly SSW/NNE to the left and to the right of the bust.  Obverse Stage B:  The obverse has been heavily abraded to remove die clash marks.  The lower one in the date is tapered from the abrading but there is still some evidence of the die clash.  An E/W die scratch pattern now runs through the date.  Obverse Stage C:  VLDS.  The Stage B die scratches have been abraded and/or worn away.  A single light SW/NE die scratch can be seen above the T in LIBERTY.  Reverse Stage A:  A light horizontal die scratch can be seen above the statue’s head.  Reverse Stage B:  The reverse die has been heavily abraded to remove die clash marks.  Die scratches run mostly E/W above and below the Memorial.  Die scratches run mostly SSW/NNE inside the Memorial.  Remnants of the die clash can be seen on the right roof of the Memorial.  Reverse Stage C:  VLDS.  The Stage B die scratches have been abraded and/or worn away.

Description:  A strong Class II spread towards the center shows on the date.  Doubling also shows on the letters of TRUST, the nose, the lips, the chin, and the right edge of the bowtie.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A die gouge (dot) can be found below the R in LIBERTY.  Two parallel die scratches run NNE from the top of the T in LIBERTY.  A die scratch runs from SW to NE between the W and E of WE.  Two parallel die scratches run NNE from the top of the 9.  Numerous other die scratches can be found on the obverse.  Obverse Stage B:  Most Stage A die scratches have been abraded away.  A small die gouge can be found between the tops of the L and I of LIBERTY.  A short die scratch runs ENE from the top of the 1.  A die scratch runs ENE from the upper right of the bowtie.  Other die scratches can be found on the obverse.  Reverse Stage A:  A die gouge can be found below the Memorial south of the left post.  A die gouge extends ESE from the top left of the N in CENT.  A nearly horizontal die gouge can be found above and between the N and T in CENT.  A long die scratch runs SSW from the bottom right of the A in STATES through the top left of the P in PLURIBUS through the lower left dot and down to the Memorial roof.  Other die scratches can be found on the reverse.  Reverse Stage B:  The Stage A die scratches have been abraded away.  A die gouge can be found below the left side of the 2nd A in AMERICA.  Two nearly parallel die scratches run NNE from the top of the left cornice.  Two parallel die scratches run SW from the left side of the left cornice and the top of the 1st column.  Several die scratches run from north to south to the right of the right cornice.  Die chips can be found on the last Memorial column.  Other die scratches can be found on the reverse.
