Description: S/S West

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A: A pair of die gouge shows at the rim above the upper left side of the S in TRUST and NE of the last T in TRUST. A die dot shows in the field SE of the lower last T in TRUST. Numerous die scratches run N-S through and well above the RTY in LIBERTY. A single die scratch runs NNE from the upper left corner of the T in LIBETY. A series of parallel die scratches run NNW-SSE in the field in front of Lincoln’s face. Numerous die scratches run north from the front of the bust, through the 1 & 9 in the date and ending in the field in front of Lincoln’s chin. A few die scratches run north from the forehead and into the upper hair curl. A concentric die scratch runs clockwise and close to the rim from just above the L in LIBERTY to the G in GOD. Obverse Stage B: Die scratches through date and in front of chin weaker. A die clash shows at the neck. A short die scratch runs N-S just left of the upper right margin of the chin. Three short parallel die scratches show inside the eye socket. A light E-W die crack shows on the lower bust above the VDB initials.  Obverse Stage C: Die clash at neck very weak. Die scratches through date and in front of chin very weak. Die crack above VDB thicker. Die scratches at eye worn away. A grouping of three die gouges (dots) show SE of the eyelid; in the field directly right of the upper bridge of the nose and on the upper nose, SE of the eye. A strong die gouge shows in the field well east of Lincoln’s lips. Reverse Stage A: Two faded and parallel die scratches run N-S inside the left margin of the C in CENT. Very light die scratches run north from the upper left side of the O in ONE. Very light die scratches run south from the lower opening of the M in AMERICA. Reverse Stage B: The N-S die scratches inside the C in CENT are still visible. A die scratch runs north from the upper left corner of the T in CENT through the E in ONE. Fresh NNW-SSE die scratches show between the U & N of UNITED and through the lower left side of the first A in AMERICA. Reverse Stage C: New reverse die. A strong die gouge shows in the field to the West of the E in E PLURIBUS. Numerous light die scratches run NNW-SSE through the upper left wheat stalk. Distinctive die scratches run south from the lower M in AMERICA. A die scratch runs south from the lower first S in STATES through the E in AMERICA. Numerous NNW-SSE through the T in STATES. A strong E-W die gouge shows at the rim above the UR in PLURIBUS. Numerous NNW-SSE through the T in CENT. A strong die scratch runs south from the lower left side of the O in OF. A light die scratch runs NW-SE through the left edge of the O in ONE.

Die Markers:  Obverse: Two die scratches show North of the date and East of the chin. A light N-S die scratch shows along the right side of the R in LIBERTY. A similar light die scratch runs South from the lower right side of the horizontal crossbar of the T in LIBERTY. A grouping of die gouges (dots) show at the back of Lincoln’s lower hair. A group of three die gouges (dots) show below and SE of Lincoln’s eye. Reverse: Two parallel die scratches run N-S through the N in UNITED and the O in OF.

Description: S/S East

Obverse: A N-S die scratch connects the lower left side of the tail of the 9 in the date with the lowest point of the upper curve. Two strong die scratches run NNW from between the 5 & 9 in the date and from above the middle 5 in the date. A short, but strong die scratch connects the upper chin with the lower lip. Numerous N-S die scratches show through and to the right of the RTY in LIBERTY. Several strong die scratches run NNW above and left of the R in LIBERTY. A light die scratch runs SE from the lower right side of the V in VDB and an additional die scratch runs ESE from the lower right side of the B in VDB. Some light NW-SE die scratches run through the R in TRUST. A short die scratch shows NE from the upper right side of the one in the date. A very light die scratch runs N-S to the left of the mint mark. Two closely spaced die scratches run SW-NE in the hair below the OD in GOD. Reverse: A die scratch runs through the lower RIB of PLURIBUS. A vertical die scratch to the left of the T in CENT. Light die scratches run North from the the upper left side of the O in ONE. Light, NNE-SSW oriented die scratches show below the second U in PLURIBUS. A light die gouge (dot) shows between and above the upper right corner of the N in CENT and the upper left corner of the T in CENT. A nice die gouge (dot) shows to the SW of the lower left corner of the E in ONE.

1950-S 1¢ WRPM-024

Description: S/S South

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A band of N-S die scratches run between the upper forehead and the front hair curl.  A strong NNW-SSE die scratch shows below the front hair curl, just East of the previously mentioned die scratches.  A series of parallel SW-NE die scratches show inside the temple behind the eye.  Two parallel die scratches run N-S from the upper lip to the chin. Die scratches run South from the R in LIBERTY. A die scratch runs North from the 9 in the date. Obverse Stage B: Almost all of the EDS markers are worn away.  A couple of very light N-S die scratches remain below the hair curl. Two very well-hidden die scratches show on the lower bust near the initials. The first, is a tiny NW-SE orientated die scratch that cuts just below the B in VDB, the second runs E-W, two letter thicknesses to the left of the V in VDB. A tiny N-S die gouge shows inside the right upper opening of the R in LIBERTY. A die gouge (dot) shows on the upper central margin of the B in LIBERTY. Reverse Stage A: Several die scratches run North from around the N in ONE with a stronger one connecting the upper diagonal crossbar of the N in ONE to the B in PLURIBUS. A die scratch runs South from the second U in PLURIBUS (Bordner’s notes). Reverse Stage B: A single N-S die scratch shows in the field NE of the upper right side of the N on ONE. A grouping of three light die scratches run South from below the lower left side of the horizontal bar of the T in CENT. A die dot shows close to the right edge of the right wheat stalk at approximately K-3.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A: Light SW-NE die scratches show below GOD. A series of strong N-S die scratches show between the R & T in LIBERTY. Lighter die scratches run North from the T in LIBERTY to the left of the previous die scratches. A light die scratch runs South from the lower left side of the mint mark. A light die scratch runs North from just left of the apex of the 9 in the date. Faded die scratches run South from the lower chin. Several N-S die scratches show in front of the lips with one stronger one connecting the upper chin to the left side of the nostril. A strong N-S die scratch shows in the field, just left of the tip of the nose. Obverse Stage B: The die scratches above the R & T in LIBERTY are weaker. Obverse Stage C: The die scratches above the R & T in LIBERTY are weaker. Obverse Stage D: The die scratches above the R & T in LIBERTY are worn away. Reverse Stage A: No die crack from the upper left wheat lines. Several die scratches run North from the top of the E in ONE to the first U in UNUM. A longer N-S die scratch runs inside the E in ONE connecting all three horizontal crossbars and running into the field to the North. Two parallel die scratches run South from both lower corners of the horizontal crossbar of the T in CENT (the right scratch is longer than the left). Reverse Stage B: Die scratches are weaker.  Reverse Stage C: A die crack runs NW to the rim from the upper left wheat stalk. Reverse Stage D: New reverse die: A light die crack runs to the rim NW of the last S in STATES. A strong die crack runs SE to the rim, East of the last A in AMERICA.

Die Markers: Obverse Stage A: A die scratch runs SSW from the lower left side of the upper curve of the 9 in the date. A light die scratch runs SSE from the lower tip of the 9 in the date almost to the bust SW of the mint mark. Die scratch runs south from R in TRUST. A die dot shows on the cheek equidistant between the lower earlobe and the back of the nose (This die gouge shows in all known die stages). A long N-S die scratch shows behind the back of the head directly between the T & Y in LIBERTY. Several strong die scratches run South from below the ER in LIBERTY. A series of light die scratches run NW-SE through and below the R in LIBERTY. Obverse Stage B: A trio of parallel die scratches run North from the T & Y in LIBERTY. A strong group of die scratches run North from the 195 in the date with a strong NNW-SSE scratch originating from inside the center of the 9 in the date. Obverse Stage C:  The die dot on the cheek is still visible. Reverse Stage A: A parallel grouping of die scratches run North from the upper left side of the N in UNITED (These die scratches are visible in all known die stages). One of these die scratches continues North in the field to above the upper C in CENT. A short SW-NE oriented die gouge shows in the field East of the central bar of the E in ONE (This die gouge is at least weakly visible in all known die stages). Reverse Stage B: Numerous die scratches run NNW from the upper left side of the C in CENT. A strong, curving die scratch runs South from the lower right side of the first U in UNUM, ending in the field just left of the central bar of the E in ONE. Reverse Stage C: The die scratches at the N in UNITED are still present. The die gouge to the East of the E in ONE is present, but weak.

Description: S/S/S Tilted and Tilted

Die Markers:  Obverse: A parallel series of die scratches run N-S through and to the right of the 1 in the date. A die dot shows to the left of the upper left curve of the mint mark. A strong die scratch runs North from the upper left branch of the Y in LIBERTY. This die scratch is intersected by a NW-SE die scratch about a letter length to the North of the Y. A grouping of die scratches run N-S between the upper forehead and the hair curl. A NW-SE die scratch shows just to the left of the previously mentioned die scratches (This area is similar to WRPM-024, but this is a different die). A faded N-S die gouge shows in the upper hair South of WE. Reverse: Two short die gouges run South from along the right upper margin of the upper left wheat lines. A series of three N-S die scratches run through and above the last A in AMERICA.

Die Markers: Obverse: Several die scratches run South from the lower tip and the field right of the chin ending to the left of the 1 in the date. Another grouping of similar die scratches run North from the upper 9 in the date ending in the field in front of the upper forehead. A light die scratch connects the eyebrow to the bridge of the nose. A strong die scratch runs SE from the lower left corner of the E in LIBERTY. A strong die gouge (dot) shows to the right of the central vertical bar of the L in LIBERTY. A light die scratch runs NW from the upper left corner of the B in LIBERTY. A grouping of closely spaced parallel die scratches run North from the TY in LIBERTY. A long line of N-S die scratches shows behind the upper head below God and the N of IN A small die gouge shows in the eye-socket, SE of the eyelid. Die Markers: Reverse: A N-S die crack along the right central opening of the O in ONE. A strong die scratch runs WSW from the lower left corner of the E in STATES. A grouping of short N-S die scratches shows in the field between the lower C and E in CENT. A light die scratch runs North from the lower right side of the left wheat SW of the O in OF.

Description: S/S East

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A: NW-SE die scratches run through the 1 in the date with the top ends fading in the field SE of the chin. A short, but strong die scratch runs mostly N-S to the left of the T in LIBERTY. A light die scratch runs NW from the upper left side of the T in LIBERTY. A faded die gouge shows at the rim NW of the S in TRUST. Die damage shows at the rim SE of the last T in TRUST at approximately K - 2:30. Obverse Stage B: Most Stage A obverse die markers are worn away. The N-S die scratch to the left of the T in LIBERTY is barely visible. Short E-W die scratches show in the lower openings of the first and second shoulder folds. Light concentric die scratches run WSW-ENE between the lower bust and the rim, below and SE of the designer’s initials. Obverse Stage C: A light die scratch runs NW from the upper head, SE of the O in GOD. Stage B die scratches inside the lower shoulder folds still present. A tiny die scratch shows along the SE margin of the mint mark.  A SSW-ENE oriented die scratch shows at the back of the front hair curl. Three faded and parallel die scratches run mostly east from the front of the neck, above the bow tie. A tiny die dot shows north of the right edge of the bow tie, just east of where the previously mentioned die scratches fade out. Obverse Stage D: The Stage B E-W die scratches in the shoulder folds are weak, but present. Two tiny die dots show in the field a good way south of the I in IN. Tiny die scratch south from the lower left corner of the mint mark still present. Obverse Stage E: Many light E-W die scratches show through and above LIBERTY. Many, mostly E-W die scratches run through and below WE (The die scratches below WE are at least somewhat visible in all later die stages). Numerous parallel die scratches run SW-NE through the UST in TRUST. Light E-W die scratches show at and below the front hair curl. Some of the E-W die scratches in the lower shoulder folds are still present. Obverse Stage F: A tiny die dot shows just to the west of the upper left curve of the mint mark. A light E-W die scratch shows just above the upper chin. An even lighter E-W die scratch runs from the lower lip. A concentric die scratch runs from the lower bust to the rim SE of the B in VDB. The Stage E die scratches below the front hair curl are present, but weak. The E-W die scratches in LIBERTY from Stage E only show above the BER in LIBERTY. A die dot shows above the upper left side of the R in LIBERTY. Obverse Stage G: The Stage F die scratch SE of the B in VDB is present, but much weaker. The right side and inner ear detail is almost completely missing. A worn E-W die scratch still remains just above the upper hair below WE. Reverse Stage A: A short die scratch runs South from the lower right arm of the M in AMERICA. Three short die scratches run north from the upper crossbar of the E in CENT. A light series of die scratches run north above and to the NW of the N in ONE. Two parallel SW-NE die scratches run through the right central opening of the O in ONE. Several light die scratches run NW into the field from the upper left curve of the O in ONE. Very faded N-S die scratches show in the field to the east of the lower E in ONE. Reverse Stage B: New reverse die. Heavy die gouge on top of upper right side of E in ONE. Numerous concentric die scratches show near the rim above almost the entire length of PLURIBUS UNUM. A strong, but short, E-W die gouge shows near the rim above the right arm of the second U in UNUM. Numerous crisscrossing die scratches run South from below the ATE in STATES and through the last A in AMERICA. NNW-SSE die scratches show through the UN in UNITED. Reverse Stage C: Die gouge on E in ONE much weaker. Other Stage B die scratches much weaker. A die gouge (dot) shows at the rim above the M in UNUM. A very light die scratch runs NE from the right side of the upper left wheat tip. A series of light die scratches run West from the back of the lower left curve of the C in CENT. A light die scratch runs WNW-ESE through the upper left  curve of the first S in STATES. A series of light, parallel die scratches run NE in the field to the right of the lower E in ONE. A single light die scratch runs east just below the previously mentioned die scratches. Reverse Stage D: New reverse die. Strong die gouges run east from the rim NE from both the first and second U in PLURIBUS (Present in all later die stages).  Slashing concentric die scratches run from the rim NE of the S in PLURIBUS and the above the N in UNUM. A long N-S die scratch runs along the right side of the T in CENT (Present in all later die stages). Die scratches roughly north from UN in UNITED. Light parallel die scratches run north from the upper side of the right wheat stem below the ICA in AMERICA. Reverse Stage E: Most Stage D die markers are present but weaker. A fresh N-S die scratch shows inside the leftmost edge of the O in ONE. A die gouge (dot) shows along the upper left side of the vertical bar of the T in CENT. A die dot shows in the field SE of the upper right crossbar of the E in ONE. Reverse Stage F: Most Stage D + E die markers are still present, but much weaker. Two fresh die dots show around the E in ONE, with one just below the middle of the lower crossbar and one a third of the way below the central crossbar. Reverse Stage G: Most reverse die markers are completely worn away except for the N-S die scratch inside the O of ONE and the die gouge at the rim NW of the first U in PLURIBUS.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A: A long die crack runs NNE from the rim on to the back of the shoulder to the left of the designer’s initials. A strong series of die scratches run NNW from the lower tail of the 9 in the date into the field in front of the profile. A long die scratch runs directly North from the top of the 1 in the date to almost level with the tip of the nose. A die scratch runs South from the tip of the ear to the collar. Light die scratches run North above the R in LIBERTY. A fine N-S die scratch shows inside the lower ear. A grouping of N-S die scratches shows between the front of the upper forehead and the upper hair curl. Obverse Stage B: A fresh die crack runs North through the upper hair to the rim through the right central portion of the W in WE. The die crack on the back of the shoulder is present, but not much stronger. The Stage A die scratches through the 9 in the date are present, but weak. Obverse Stage C: Heavier die cracks.  Die chip on the crack at the W of WE. Reverse Stage A: Two closely spaced parallel die scratches run N-S perfectly between the lower A & M in AMERICA. A long die scratch runs North from just above the previously mentioned die scratches through the E in UNITED, the E in ONE almost to the B in PLURIBUS. A long die scratch runs SSW from the lower left corner of the E in AMERICA. Numerous parallel die scratches run North above the N in ONE. A long die scratch runs SSE from the lower right side of the R in AMERICA. A similar, but slightly stronger die scratch runs SSE through the C in AMERICA all the way to the right wheat stem. A die scratch runs South along the left side of the vertical bar of the second T in STATES. Reverse Stage B: The parallel N-S die scratches between the lower A & M in AMERICA are present, but weak. A short portion of the die scratch above shows between the O & N in ONE. The N-S die scratch to the left of the second T in STATES is present, but weak. Some of the parallel die scratches above the N in ONE are still visible. Reverse Stage C: Only weak die scratches at the first S in STATES still present.  Die crack right wheat.

Description: S/S South

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A: Numerous N-S die scratches show under the chin, above the bowtie and through the 1 & 9 in the date. A group of three parallel NNW-SSE die scratches overrun some lighter N-S die scratches above the TY in LIBERTY. A number of die scratches run South from the underside of the L and the BERT in LIBERTY with three of the strongest ones below the E in LIBERTY A N-S die scratch shows very close to the back of the hair. A die gouge (dot) shows in the field, SE of the lower T in CENT. A die dot shows on the upper forehead, just below the front hair curl. A series of WNW-ESE die scratches show on the lower margin of the bust through and East of the B in the designer’s initials. A N-S die scratch runs behind the middle of the lapel. Obverse Stage B: The die gouge (dot) on the upper forehead and below the hair curl is still visible. The die gouges through the date and under the chin are either missing or weak. The three NNW-SSE die scratches above the TY in LIBERTY are still visible. The grouping of three die scratches below the E in LIBERTY are still visible. The die scratches through the B in VDB are still present. Most of the other Stage A die markers are worn away. Reverse Stage A: Generally N-S die scratches show throughout most of the reverse. Strong N-S die scratches show above and below the diagonal bar of the N in CENT. Die abrasion has slightly reduced the thickness of the upper right vertical bar of the N in CENT. A strong die gouge orientated N-S shows in the field to the left of the T in CENT. A long die scratch runs SSW from the lower center of the E in AMERICA. A strong die scratch runs straight South from the bottom right corner of the N in UNITED, grazing the right side of the O in OF and ending in the field just North of the left wheat stem. Several other N-S die scratches show in this area. Reverse Stage B: The Stage A die scratches through the N in CENT have been reduced to only showing at the corners. The die gouge to the left of the T is still present. Some of the N-S die scratches still show around and above the U & N in UNUM.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A: Series of die scratches south from the mintmark, including one short heavy scratch.  SW die scratch from left center of the 9 in the date to the vest.  N/S die scratches in the field right of the profile to the date.  Series of various die scratches at the top of the hair SE of the D in GOD.  Series of N/S die scratches in the field adjacent the middle of the back of the head that run through the RTY of LIBERTY.  N/S die scratches below LIBERTY.  N/S die scratch on the back of the neck.  Die gouges on the jacket from the upper left side of the lapel. Obverse Stage B: A tiny die gouge (dot) shows East of the lower lip (visible in all known die stages). A strong SSW-NNE die scratch runs from the right of the bowtie just grazing the tip of the chin and ending in the field East of the lips. Several light N-S die scratches run left of the one in the date. A strong N-S oriented die gouge shows at the central margin of the top of the forehead and the upper hair (Well SSE of the E in WE). Two NNW-SSE die scratches run between the 1 & 9 in the date. A light die scratch runs SW to the front of the bust from below the tip of the curve of the 9 in the date. Two die scratches run South from below the tail of the 9 in the date, just left of the mint mark. Some light die scratches show on the upper hair, SE of the D in GOD. Light N-S die scratches show inside the temple area. A N-S die scratch shows on the central jaw. Several light die scratches run North from the central collar. Obverse Stage C: A strong die gouge (dot) shows approximately one letter width North of the T in LIBERTY. The die dot East of the lower lip is still present. The die gouge on the upper central forehead is still present. Most other Stage B die markers worn away. Obverse Stage D: The strong die gouge (dot) North of the T in LIBERTY is still prominent. A strong die gouge (dot) shows a number width NNW of the 9 in the date. The die dot East of the lower lip is still present. The die gouge on the upper central forehead is still present. Obverse Stage E: Die crack from the rim at 12:00 o’clock running south through the right side of the W in WE and into the head. Reverse Stage A: Die scratch south from the right side of the left wheatear positioned left of the C in CENT.  Die scratches south by east from the N in UNITED.  Heavy die scratches on either side of the I in AMERICA, north to the TA of STATES. Reverse Stage B: A light die crack runs NW-SE through the central three wheat lines, East from the top of the C in CENT. A light die scratch runs South from the lower right side of the B in PLURIBUS. Several light, but long N-S die scratches show to the right of the T in CENT. Three nice N-S and parallel die scratches run through the upper E in CENT. Most of the lower right margin of the right wheat stalk has been worn away. Reverse Stage C: The die crack on the left central wheat lines has lengthened and runs North to the top area of the third wheat line from the left. A die crack runs SE to the rim from the lower right wheat stalk, SE from the last S in STATES. Reverse Stage D: New reverse die. A fine die scratch runs S from the lower center of the I in PLURIBUS to the left side of the N in ONE. Several other N-S die scratches show in this area. Light die scratches run mostly South on either side of the vertical bar of the T in CENT. Numerous N-S die scratches overlaid by a more curved scratch show on either side of the second T in STATES and the CA in AMERICA. Reverse Stage E: Die scratches are weaker.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A: Consistently N-S die scratches show all over the obverse. Stronger ones show through the RT and above the Y in LIBERTY, through and above the bowtie and through the date and mint mark area. A strong series of die gouges show on the lower central beard. Obverse Stage B: The remnant of a die clash shows NE of the Y in LIBERTY. The die gouges on the lower central beard have become more pronounced. Many of the lighter Stage A die scratches have been worn away. Obverse Stage C: A small die dot shows just above the left branch of the Y in LIBERTY. The Stage B die clash is still visible. The die gouges on the lower beard are still visible. Nearly all of the N-S die scratches have been worn away. Obverse Stage D: A fresh grouping of N-S die scratches show in the field behind the lower bust. A SW-NE die crack is beginning to form on the back of the bust, SE of the Y in LIBERTY. A small, but prominent die gouge (dot) shows on the lapel at the margin of the lower bust. Obverse Stage E: This die stage has been heavily abraded with numerous fresh N-S die scratches now visible throughout the obverse. The die crack on the back of the bust has increased in length to the SW. A curved die gouge runs WNW-ESE through the V & D in VDB. A short N-S die gouge shows at the eye. Reverse Stage A: N-S die scratches show throughout most of the central reverse. A strong series of die scratches run SSE from below and right of the N in UNITED through OF. A long die scratch runs North from the center of the upper horizontal bar of the E in CENT just missing the right side of the O in ONE and ending in the field above it. Another strong die scratch runs North along the left side of the right vertical bar of the N in CENT ending in the field to the right side of the N in ONE about a third of the way below its upper right edge. A short die gouge runs North from the lower left edge of the right wheat stalk East of the last A in STATES. Short, but heavy die gouges run NNW from the tops of both T’s in STATES. Reverse Stage B: Only a single SSE die scratch remains below the N in UNITED which cuts through the central left opening of the O in OF and ends just above the left wheat stem. The die scratch to the North of the E in CENT is still visible. The short die NNW die gouges above both T’s in STATES are still visible. The die gouge from the left die of the lower right wheat stalk is visible, but weaker. Reverse Stage C: A light die crack shows on the central left wheat stalk beginning left of the upper U in UNITED and running NNW to the upper left wheat lines. The SSE die scratch from the lower N in UNITED through the O of OF is visible, but much weaker. A curved die crack shows in the central right wheat stalk East and above the last S in STATES. Reverse Stage D: New reverse die. A nice grouping of three mostly parallel die scratches run from the lower side of the upper crossbar of the F in OF, South to the lower left wheat stem. A long die scratch runs from the lower right side of the U in UNITED SSE to the upper left side of the left wheat stem. Numerous other NNW-SSE die scratches run through the UNI of UNITED and OF. Numerous strong, mostly N-S die scratches run through the lower sides of the RICA in AMERICA. Numerous light N-S die scratches and a strong die gouge in the field to the East show around the T in CENT. Three strong, mostly N-S die scratches run through the opening of the C in CENT. Reverse Stage E: Nearly all the Stage D die scratches are worn away. A single Stage D die scratch remains running from the lower left arm of the last A in AMERICA, South to the right wheat stem. A fresh die scratch runs South from the lower right arm of the M in AMERICA.

A light die scratch runs South from the lower chin to the front of the bust left of the 1 in the date. A die dot shows in the field SW of the first T in TRUST. A stronger die dot shows along the border of the upper hair at a 45-degree angle, SW of the first T in TRUST. Very light die scratches run NNW above the TY in LIBERTY. Two faded die gouges run SE from the rim above the right arm of the U in TRUST. A strong die scratch runs close to the rim NE of the last T in TRUST. Reverse: A strong die scratch runs South from the lower left side of the C in CENT and curves East to just miss the upper right arm of the N in UNITED. Several N-S die scratches run on either side of the vertical bar of the T in CENT. A light die scratch runs North from the upper T in UNITED to the lower left corner of the T in CENT. A die dot shows between the lower left wheat stalk and the rim at approximately K-8:00. A similar die dot shows just below and left of the upper wheat line tips. Several fine die scratches run NNW-SSE from the LU in PLURIBUS through the O in ONE. Die scratch south from the F in OF to the left wheat stem.

Two parallel die scratches connect the bridge of the nose to the eyebrow. A similar die scratch runs NNW very closely to the front of the forehead to the upper hair curl. A strong series of die scratches run South from below the ear and lower beard. Strong N-S die scratches show on the beard to the East of the lower ear. A strong N-S die scratch runs North from between the T & Y in LIBERTY. Several die scratches run South or SSE through the lower areas of the ER in LIBERTY. Three parallel die scratches run SSE from below the right side of the R in TRUST. A single die scratch parallel to the last ones runs from the lower U in TRUST. A distinctive series of mostly N-S die scratches show on and above the upper hair below GOD. Some light N-S die scratches show inside the temple area. Reverse: A die gouge (dot) shows on the left outer side of the U in UNITED about a third of the way up. A tiny die dot shows almost equally between the lower U and N of UNITED. A tiny die dot shows just to the left of the lower L in PLURIBUS. A die dot shows to the right of the lower curve of the C in CENT. A slightly larger die dot shows NNE of the previously mentioned die dot.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A: A die scratch runs mostly south from the middle right side of the 9 in the date. A series of three well-spaced die scratches run north from the back of the bust. Several light N-S die scratches and one heavy one run below and left of the I in IN. Numerous N-S oriented die scratches run through the RTY in LIBERTY. Multiple irregular die scratches on lower beard and neck. Obverse Stage B: The NNW-SSE die scratches between the 1 and 9 in the date are still visible. The die scratch south from the middle right side of the 9 in the date is very weakly visible. The series of three die scratches north from the back of the bust are weakly visible. The N-S die scratches through LIBERTY are mostly confined to the area above and around the T and below the E and R. Multiple irregular die scratches on lower beard and neck unchanged. A series of SW-NE oriented die scratches show inside the opening of the ear. The die scratches below and left of the I in IN are worn away. Light die scratch running NW to SE over left tip of jacket. Obverse Stage C: Most Stage B markers gone. Die scratch over left jacket tip weaker. Die scratches in beard and on neck very weak. New die scratches show through the left side of the date and left of the mint mark. A single N-S die scratch connects the lower tip of the nose with the upper chin. Numerous die scratches run mostly south below LIBERTY. Die gouge under right side of N in IN. Obverse Stage D: Stage C die scratches in date weaker. Die gouge under N in IN weaker. A die gouge (dot) shows between the lower U and S of TRUST. A die gouge (dot) shows on the front of the bust, SW of the 1 in the date. Reverse Stage A: The lower right margin of the right wheat stalk has been mostly abraded away. Several N-S die scratches show above and below the area of weakness on the lower right wheat stalk. Numerous N-S die scratches run through the N in UNITED and the O in OF. Numerous, N-S die scratches show through the and below the back of the C in CENT. Two die scratches hug the right side of the lower left wheat stalk, SW and West of the U in UNTIED. Numerous N-S die scratches run through and below the central left side of the O in ONE. A N-S oriented die scratch shows to the left of the lower T in CENT. Reverse Stage B: The die scratches through and below the C in CENT are visible, but much weaker. The N-S die scratch left of the lower T in CENT is weakly visible. The right margin of the lower right wheat stalk is even weaker. Reverse Stage C: New reverse die. Many, N-S oriented die scratches show throughout most of the reverse, the strongest of which run through the O and N in ONE. A very long die scratch runs south from the SE corner of the I in PLURIBUS, between the O and N in ONE, through the center of the E in CENT and into the E in UNITED. Reverse Stage D: Stage C die scratches much weaker. A series of die gouges show through the MER in AMERICA. A die gouge (dot) shows in the field, well below the O in OF.

Die Markers:  Obverse: A myriad of N-S die scratches show all around the front of Lincoln’s profile. Distinctive die scratches in this area include a N-S one connecting the upper chin with the upper lip and several spike like die scratches showing below the chin. Many distinctive die scratches run N-S above the upper hair around WE and the TR in TRUST and a strong die gouge (dot) shows between the lower W and E in WE. Many strong N-S die scratches show behind the lower hair and a strange die gouge shows to the NE of the Y in LIBERTY. Reverse: A nice die scratch runs NNW-SSE through the upper curve of the C in CENT. Many light N-S die scratches show behind the vertical section of the C in CENT. Three N-S die scratches show inside the lower opening of the E in CENT. A strong die scratch runs NW from the upper right side of the O in ONE ending below and between the UR in PLURIBUS. Two long die scratches run below the right lower arm of the R in PLURIBUS, forming and inverted V shape.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A: Several die scratches show inside the lower opening of the 9 in the date and between and above the 1 and 9 in the date. A light die scratch runs perfectly South from the lowest tip of the 9 in the date left of the mint mark. Numerous N-S die scratches run above and below the RTY in LIBERTY with two stronger ones running South from SE of the lower right arm of the R and east of the T in LIBERTY. Obverse Stage B: Two mostly N-S die cracks show on Lincoln’s back, SE of the Y in LIBERTY. The stronger die scratches near the R and T in LIBERTY still visible. A die gouge shows on the upper hair below the G in GOD, Some of the die scratches through the 1 and 9 in the date are still visible. Reverse Stage A: A strong die gouge runs North from just right of the Apex of the last A in AMERICA. Several parallel N-S die scratches connect the lower A in STATES with the upper C in AMERICA. A die gouge runs mostly N-S near the rim, NE of the upper right side of the second U in PLURIBUS.  A NNW-SSE die scratch runs just to the left of the E in AMERICA grazing the lower SW corner at one point. Similarly oriented die scratches run beneath the M in AMERICA. Many N-S die scratches show on either side of the T in CENT and some parallel die scratches run NNE from its top. A long die scratch runs North from the central lower crossbar of the E in CENT where it then crosses through the upper tip and ends between the U & N in UNUM. Reverse Stage B: Some of the Stage A die scratches around the T in CENT are still visible. Short sections of the Stage A die scratches around the E and M in AMERICA are still visible. All other Stage A die scratches are worn away.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A: A die crack runs from the lower rim at K-7:00, between the D & B in VDB and extends a long way North on the central bust. A grouping of die scratches run N-S between the Y in LIBERTY and the back of the neck. A series of light die scratches run N-S in the upper hair and in the field below the D in GOD. Obverse Stage B: The Stage A die crack is slightly stronger. Three short die gouges run S, SSE and SE through the V in VDB left of the previously mentioned die crack. Obverse Stage C: The die crack through the lower bust is thicker. The die gouges through the V in VDB are much weaker. A new die crack runs SW to the rim from the lower left corner of the B in LIBERTY. Obverse Stage D: Very few different makers from Stage C. A die gouge (dot) is visible on the lower front of the bust, SSW of the mint mark. A die gouge (dot) shows along the lower left curve of the G in GOD. Obverse Stage E: Very similar to Stage C and D. The die gouge on the lower bust is still present. The die gouge on the G in GOD is still present. Two tiny die dots show around the I in IN with one well to the left of the I in IN and one just to the SW of the lower I in IN. Reverse Stage A: A series of die scratches run N-S through the upper E in ONE. A series of E-W die scratches run between the T & E in States and the ICA of AMERICA. Reverse Stage B: All Stage A die markers are worn away. A new series of N-S die scratches show between the F of OF and the first A in AMERICA, left of the T in STATES, and through the ES in STATES. Two die scratches run South from below the right lower arm of the R in AMERICA and between the lower C & A in AMERICA. Reverse Stage C: A die crack runs to the rim from the lower left wheat stalk, SW of the U in UNITED. Reverse Stage D: The stage C die crack to the rim is stronger. A tiny die gouge (dot) shows at the top left of the E in ONE. Reverse Stage E: The die crack now runs NNE onto the field to just below the N in UNUM.  A strong die dot shows well left of the upper C in CENT. Some light N-S die scratches show around the T in CENT and a die gouge shows on the central left side of the vertical bar of the T in CENT.

A tiny die gouge (dot) shows inside the upper left opening of the Y in LIBERTY. Two extremely light curved die cracks in hair above ear. Obverse Stage D: Stage A markers all worn away. Two extremely light die cracks in hair above ear unchanged. Numerous, mostly N-S die scratches run through and above the T in LIBERTY. Several die scratches show at the junction of the forehead and the front hair curl. Several N-S die scratches show in the field behind the back of the head. A series of mostly N-S die scratches show through the 1 and 9 in the date and below the chin. Two short, parallel die scratches run North from near the tip of the nose. Several N-S oriented die scratches show behind Lincoln’s neck, ENE of the Y in LIBERTY. Numerous die scratches run SE from the R and U in TRUST. A NNE-SSW oriented die scratch shows in the field in front of Lincoln’s eye brow.  Obverse Stage E: All Stage D die markers are either worn away or much weaker. The upper die crack on the head is slightly longer. Stage A: Many N-S die scratches show all over the reverse. A strong die scratch runs SSE from the lower left of the I in PLURIBUS to the upper left side of the N in ONE. Two parallel die scratches run SSE through the first E and from the upper left corner of the P in E PLURIBUS. A tiny die dot shows on the lower crossbar of the E in PLURIBUS, just right of the SSE die scratch. A strong die scratch runs N from the upper right side of the U in UNITED. Two parallel N-S die scratches connect the T in STATES with the R in AMERICA and the A in STATES and the C in AMERICA. Reverse Stage B: All Stage A die markers are missing. Die abrasion has slightly reduced the thickness of the upper right arm of the N in CENT. Numerous closely spaced and parallel die scratches connect the lower T in CENT with the second T in STATES with one stronger one running South under the left side of the horizontal crossbar of the second T in STATES. A strong grouping of three die scratches run South from the lower C in AMERICA. Reverse Stage C: All stage B die markers are missing. Two tiny die dots show along the inside middle edge of the right arm of the U in UNITED, one above the other. Reverse Stage D: New reverse die. A strong finger feeder die gouge shows NNE of the last S in STATES. A NNE-SSW die scratch grazes the upper right edge of the left wheat tip joining a short, N-S die gouge at its southern end which forms a “V” shape. Numerous, SSW-NNE die scratches show through the STA in STATES. A series of die scratches run mostly North from the upper left edge of the N in UNITED to the lower left edge of the C in CENT. A long die scratch runs NNW in the field behind the upper C in CENT to below the first dot in EPU. A long die scratch runs from the underside of the R in PLURIBUS to the upper right edge of the O in ONE. Numerous, light die scratches run mostly N-S through the left side of the horizontal crossbar of the T in CENT to the underside of the E in ONE. Reverse Stage E: The finger feeder die gouge to the NNE of the last S in STATES is still visible. The die gouges at the upper left wheat tip are weakly visible. The die scratches through the STA in STATES are worn away. The die scratches around the N in UNITED are very weak. The die scratch behind the C in CENT is weakly visible. The die scratch from the underside of the R in PLURIBUS is worn away.
