of the lower hair. A strong die dot shows along the back of the vest, SSE from
the lower Y in LIBERTY. Numerous
parallel NNE-SSE die scratches run above and below the BERTY of LIBERTY. A
series of fine N-S die scratches show below the tip of Lincoln’s chin. A pair of parallel N-S die scratches show on
the profile at the back of Lincoln’s mouth.
Two faded concentric die scratches run close to the rim below and behind
the back of the lower bust. A short die gouge shows at the rim NE from the 0 in
the date. Obverse Stage B: A die
crack runs over the designer’s initials. A curved die scratch runs from the back of the
bust through the upper right side of the Y in LIBERTY. A curved die scratch
runs from the lower left side of the E in LIBERTY to the lower back of the
bust. An E-W die crack shows on the back
of the forehead. Reverse Stage A: A strong

chip (dot) on the upper center of the C in AMERICA. Reverse Stage C: A light die crack runs SE to the rim from the
lower right side of the right wheat stalk. A long thin die scratch runs ESE
from the lower right leg of the R in PLURIBUS to almost touching the lower
right leg of the N in UNUM. A short, but strong die scratch runs South in the
field near the lower left side of the second U in PLURIBUS. This die scratch intersects the previously
mentioned ESE die scratch. A small die gouge (dot) shows at the upper margin of
the C in AMERICA. Two long and parallel die scratches run ENE from the lower
right side of the left wheat stalk below OF.
These die scratches run all the way through the lower A & M in
AMERICA where they join several other parallel die scratches above and below
that area. A tiny die scratch runs
North from the direct upper center of the T in CENT. Two die dots, almost a
letter width apart show inside the lower E in ONE. Three die dots run in a
NW-SE line inside the upper opening of the E in ONE.

Die Markers: Obverse
Stage A: A long die scratch runs SSE from the lower tip of the chin almost
to the front of the bust, left of the 1 in the date. A tiny die gouge shows on
the upper margin of the hair, SE of the G in GOD. A short slashing die scratch
shows in the upper hair just SE of the previously mentioned die gouge. Faded
light die scratches run SSE-NNW through and between the 1 and 9 in the date . A
short N-S die gouges shows on the vest, SW from the buttonhole. Obverse Stage B: A strong die gouge
shows inside the lower left margin of the tail of the 9 in the date. Two long
die scratches form a V to the left of the mint mark. A very strong die dot
shows in the field, NW of the 1 in the date. A heavily abraded die clash shows
at the throat. Heavy N-S abrasion lines show through the outer chin area. A
strong die dot shows in the field East of the upper chin. Two mostly parallel
die scratches run through the tip of the nose with one running all the way SE
to between the 1 & 9 in the date where it crosses a strong N-S die scratch
above it. Numerous NW-SE die scratches show though and NE of the T & Y in
LIBERTY. A die dot shows in the field well South of the N in IN. A short N-S
die scratch shows just in front of the eye. A strong die dot shows in the
field, well East of the mint mark and below the 5 & 0 in the date. Obverse Stage C: The Stage B die gouge
is still present in the tail of the 9 in the date. The die gouge to the NW in
the 1 in the date is still present. Die clash at throat faintly visible. Most
other Stage B die markers are either much weaker or missing. A faded die
scratch runs WNW from the central left side of the W in WE. Obverse Stage D: Die gouge in 9 faintly
present. Die gouge NW of 1 faintly present. All other Stage C die markers worn
away. Numerous N-S die scratches show to the left of the 1 in the date. A
strong die gouge shows along the lower right side of the 1 in the date. A “V”
shaped die scratch shows on the neck NW of the bow tie. N-S die scratches show
on the cheek, west of the back of the mouth. Strong N-S die scratches show
inside the upper shoulder fold. Light, N-S die scratches show on the back of
the neck SW of the lower ear. Light, parallel die scratches run N-S directly
behind the back of the head. A strong, but faded die scratch runs north of the
5 in the date. A strong die gouge runs south from the lower last T in TRUST. A
die gouge runs south from the rim at K-2. Reverse
Stage A: A small die gouge shows on the upper left side of the vertical bar
of the T in CENT. Light parallel die scratches connect the upper T in CENT with
the lower E in ONE. A die dot shows East of the upper horizontal crossbar of
the E in ONE. Two faded N-S die scratches show in the field to the left of the
E in ONE, SE of the previously mentioned die dot. A small die gouge shows on the
lower margin of the C in CENT and a faded die scratch runs South from this
gouge. Reverse Stage B: The Stage A
small die gouge on the lower margin of the C in CENT and the faded die scratch
running South are weak, but visible. The Stage A die gouge along the upper left
side of the T in CENT is still present. The Stage A die scratches to the left
of the opening of the E in ONE are barely visible. All other Stage A die
markers are worn away. A tiny die dot shows between the lower N and E in ONE.
Two other tiny die dots show NE of the upper right side of the N in CENT and
below the left side of the E in ONE. Reverse
Stage C: A die crack runs to the rim from the upper left side of the left
wheat stalk. The die gouge on the upper left side of the T in CENT is still
present (This die gouge shows in all known die stages). A die dot shows inside the opening of the N
in CENT. A small die dot shows along the left upper margin of the upper E in
ONE. A die dot shows to the right of the lower opening of the E in ONE. Reverse Stage D: New reverse die. A
light die crack shows on the central left wheat stalk NW of the U in UNUM. A
single die scratch runs south from the lower M in AMERICA. A very light die
scratch runs north from the upper left arm of the N in UNITED. A faded N-S die
scratch shows inside the central opening of the C in AMERICA. A die gouge (dot)
shows along the back of the E in ONE just east and above the central crossbar.

Die Markers: Obverse Stage A: A strong series of die
gouges show at the rim right of the last T in TRUST at approximately K-2:30. An
additional die gouge shows at the rim at K-3:00 (These die gouges show in all
known die stages). Faded die scratches run North from the RTY in LIBERTY with a
stronger one emanating from the upper right side of the T in LIBERTY. A NW-SE
die scratch shows on the lower bust to the left of the B in VDB. Light
concentric die scratches show at the back of the lips and on the beard. A
WSW-ESE die scratch shows on the upper cheek, SE of the eyelid. Obverse Stage B: The die gouges at
K-2:30 and K-3:00 are present, but weaker (These die gouges show in all known
die stages). A short die gouge runs South from the lower margin of the
shoulder, just left from the V in VDB. Obverse
Stage C: The die gouges at K-2:30 and K-3:00 are present, but weaker (These
die gouges show in all known die stages). Two very strong SW-NE die scratches
run through the R in TRUST. The
Stage B, short die gouge that runs South from the lower margin of the shoulder,
just left from the V in VDB is present and stronger. Fine concentric die
scratches show at the rim above IN GOD WE T. A short SSW-NNE die crack shows in
the upper hair below WE. A short die gouge runs SW from the lower left side of
the W in WE. Reverse Stage A: Two
parallel, but widely spaced N-S die scratches run through the O in OF and to
the left of the first A in AMERICA. These die scratches continue South to the
lower left wheat stem. Very light die scratches run North from the upper left
side of the N in UNITED. A long N-S die scratch runs South from between the M
& E in AMERICA. A long die scratch runs North from the upper right side of
the last A in AMERICA. Several short die scratches run North from the lower
right wheat stem. A well-hidden die dot shows on the lower left wheat stalk SW
of the U in UNITED and between the third and fourth kernels from the bottom
(This marker is present in Stages A & B).
Reverse Stage B: A strong die
gouge (dot) shows above the upper central margin of the vertical crossbar of
the T in CENT. The previously mentioned Stage A die dot between kernels three
and four is still present. A tiny die gouge shows along the upper right margin
of the right wheat tassels. Reverse
Stage C: New reverse die. Numerous N-S die scratches show throughout most
of the reverse. Some notable ones include a strong scratch inside the E in ONE
and a distinctive die scratch pattern through the UNI of UNITED and OF.

on the neck, NW of the bow tie (These die scratches are present in all known
die stages). Two short, but strong die gouges run SE from below the lower
central chin area. A long, but faded group of die scratches run North form the
19 in the date and end in the field just below nose level. Obverse Stage B: The Stage A die damage at the rim SW of the last T
in TRUST at approximately K-2:00 is present, but weak. The Stage A concentric
die gouge along the rim from K-9:30 clockwise to between the N of IN and the G
in GOD is present and strong. The Stage A die scratches running North from the
T in LIBERTY are still visible. The Stage A die dot NE of the I in IN is much
weaker. Obverse Stage C: Most Stage
A and B markers are still present. A die clash line shows at the throat above
the bowtie. Obverse Stage D: The
Stage A-C die scratches on the neck and North from the T in LIBERTY are still
present. The die clash at the neck has been heavily abraded leaving numerous
N-S die scratches. A fresh series of N-S die scratches connect the lower nose
with the upper chin. Obverse Stage E: The
Stage A-C die scratches North from the T in LIBERTY have been reduced to two
long parallel scratches. The die
scratches on the neck NW of the bowtie are still present. The die damage at the
rim below the last T in TRUST is completely missing. The N-S die abrasion marks
at the neck are present but weaker. Reverse
Stage A: A strong series of die scratches run N-S though the E in ONE. Two
short die scratches run North from the upper left side of the horizontal
crossbar in the T in CENT (Visible in all known die stages). A short die
scratch runs North from the upper left side of the O in OF. Light N-S die
scratches show through and below the AMER in AMERICA. A strong die scratch runs
South from the lower left corner of the E in STATES to the right side of the
last A in AMERICA. A small die gouge (dot) shows along the upper left margin of
the U in UNITED. Reverse Stage B: Most
Stage A die markers are present but weaker. A new die scratch runs North from
the apex of the O in ONE. Reverse Stage
C: Most Stage A and B markers are still present. Evidence of a die clash
shows inside the lower right opening of the C in CENT. Reverse Stage D: Nearly all of the Stage A-C markers are worn away.
The light die scratches running North from the upper left side of horizontal
crossbar of the T in CENT are still present. A light N-S die scratch shows
between the E and R in AMERICA. The short die scratch running North from the
