We have been asked by several people to compile a “Best Of” list for the 2009 Lincoln 1¢ doubled die varieties. Those making this request cite the fact that there are too many varieties and many of them are very minor. They really don’t want to try to put together a collection of all of them. Rather, they would like to assemble a collection of the “nicest” and “strongest” varieties, and they are looking for some “official verdict” as to what those varieties are.
My initial reaction was not to assemble such a list, but since I have compiled similar lists for other issues, I decided to go ahead and compile the list. In The Authoritative Reference on Lincoln Cents – Second Edition we have separate chapters that illustrate the best Lincoln Wheat cent doubled die varieties and the best Lincoln Memorial cent doubled die varieties. That same reference also has a chapter illustrating the best of the Lincoln cent RPM varieties. For the Wexler Doubled Die Files you can also obtain the following books: The Best of the Jefferson Nickel Doubled Die Varieties – Second Edition, and also The Best of the Washington Quarter Doubled Die Varieties.
To qualify as a “Best Of” variety, the doubled die must fall into at least the “Significant” category in the Wexler Doubled Die Files. No “Minor” or “Very Minor” varieties are included in this list. Die markers and other information are not included here since that information can be found on the master pages for these listings.
